It depends on the diesel and it depends on the 1.4 petrol. Generally though I'd say if you're doing lots of long motorway miles then the diesel will always work out cheaper on fuel. Do your sums though and work out how much you'll pay extra to buy the diesel and how long it will take you to make that money back in fuel savings.
