Not happy with my VRT bill...

I have imported an Vauxhall Astra Excite from the north recently, when I done the VRT calculater check on a 1.4 astra for 2011 model it came in at €720 so I went for this as it was cheap VRT but when I done the same check for the excite model its coming in at €1100 for VRT, I am struggling to see where the €300 difference is coming from and is there anyway to pay €720 VRT instead of €1100?

Our answer:

Hi Stephen,

You can indeed query a VRT ruling, but the trick is that you have to pay what Revenue says first, and then try and convince them to refund you. The problem is that the €300 gap can be easily explained by extra equipment, alloy wheels, paint finishes, or just lower mileage, so it’s a tough job to try and get any money back. Unfortunately it’s an inequity of the Irish car tax system — you have to pay what they say, one way or the other.
