Need some van tax and insurance answers...

Hello, getting lots of conflicting answers from people so I thought I'd come here to ask about Van tax and insurance. I'm registered as a sole trader as a videographer (I do need the load space, I'm not just looking to cheat the system!). I've heard the terms commercial tax, goods vehicle, private insurance, commercial insurance, etc. and I'm just looking to have van tax and insurance explained to me, and what I can and can't do/what's allowed etc. I've stumbled across a VW Golf R32 van online that's looking very appealing to me.

Our answer:

Hi Blaine,

Van tax is simple — if a car qualifies as a commercial, then you can tax it as one as long as you’re only, and very strictly, using it for business purposes. That means no using it for social, domestic, or pleasure use, or you could incur a significant fine. As for commercial insurance, all of the major insurers have van-specific policies available, but it’s doubtful that they’d apply them to a converted Golf R32 — back seats or no back seats, any insurer is going to see that as a high performance car, not a van.
