For that low price and with just the one stipulation on what you need, there’s a huge variety of choice – anything from automatic city cars, like the ‘K11’ Nissan Micra, through outdated SUVs (Mitsubishi Pajero) and MPVs (Opel Zafira), up to and including old premium German tin in the shape of Audi A4s/A6s, BMW 3 Series and Mercedes C-Class… as long as you accept that almost everything in this price range will be quite old and will likely have done at least 160,000km. The devil in us says go for an E46 BMW 318i SE Steptronic Coupe we’ve seen for €1,300, but really (and pragmatically) a mid-sized family hatchback wouldn’t be a bad bet. You’ll probably find early Mk1 Ford Focus automatics in good, clean condition and seventh-generation ‘EP’ Honda Civics too, which should both give you many more miles of fuss- and trouble-free motoring – the Honda, especially.
