Yes, this does seem to be a common issue with the Avensis, and it’s down to the fact that, on the saloon model, the aerial is integrated into the rear screen glass. That in and of itself can sometimes mean poor radio reception, and on top of that the connection between aerial and radio can often be problematic. One possible solution is to retro-fit a proper stand-up external aerial (as was fitted to the Tourer estate model), which can be done at a good car audio specialist. There could, of course, be an issue with the header unit, so I’d book into your local Toyota dealer for them to have a look at the problem, first.
