It’s a bit of a tough one to find a compact car (I’m assuming you want something around the same size as the Subaru) with a diesel engine and four-wheel drive, but how about this – we tracked down a 2012 MINI Countryman Cooper D with the very frugal 1.6 diesel engine and All4 four-wheel drive. Smart looking, lots of fun to drive and buckets of space. Worth a look, perhaps, priced at €21k. We also found a few Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI diesel with 4Motion four-wheel drive and they’re cracking good cars. Priced around the same level for 2012 model, but you can get older ones a bit cheaper than that.
