I'm afraid I've not come across anything like that on a modern Golf! That generation did have known issues with the ignition locks, where the engine wouldn't turn off when the key was turned to the off position, so it's possible that this is linked, but surprising, if so. Best advice I can give you is to bring the car along to a good mechanic and have it plugged into a diagnostic computer to see if there are any error codes they can start with.
