My 24-year-old son is looking for his first car... obviously, budget is a big factor for him. Any suggestions?

Our answer:

Hi Robin,

Key question – has he passed his test yet? If not, he needs to stick to around 1.0 litres and that pretty well restricts him to a 1992 to 2002 Nissan Micra or an early-2000s Toyota Yaris. Not the most stylish cars around, but solid and reliable and better to drive than he might think.

If he has passed his test and insurance isn’t such a big issue, then the field it a bit more open. I’d say have a good long look at a 2005 Suzuki Swift 1.3 GL or GLX. Cute styling, reliable mechanicals and really good fun to drive. Fiesta or Polo also make very solid, sensible choices.
