Motor tax on a Mercedes SL?

Motor tax on a Mercedes SL 350

Our answer:

Hi Jerry,

If it’s an older ‘R230’ model, built from 2001-2011, with either the 3.7-litre or 3.5-litre V6 engines, then it emits 276g/km (3.7) or 236g/km (3.5). It will then depend on whether it’s a pre-2008 car or a post-2008 model, because if the former it goes on engine capacity and it sits in the highest possible band (3,001cc or more), resulting in an annual bill of €1,809 for tax. It’s worse news if it’s a post-2008 car, because it also sits in the highest possible tax bracket there – Band G, or €2,350 per annum.

If it’s an R231 sixth-generation car, though, of which an SL 350 with a 3.5-litre V6 was built from 2012-2014, you’re in slightly more luck. This was said to emit a mere 159g/km of CO2, believe it or not, which places it in Band D at €570 per annum. Of course, you’ll pay a lot more to buy an R231 SL 350 in the first place, than you would for an R230 SL 350…
