Well, you can kind of have fuel efficiency or power, but not both. The best recent petrol-engined car for motorway work is probably the Skoda Octavia with the 1.2 TSI turbo engine. It only has 105hp, but feels more sparky than that, and returns decent, almost-diesel-y, fuel economy.
