Each to their own, but I'd highly recommend going through the tougher learning curve to get your daughter started on a manual car. She can always choose to go to an automatic later on, but it's very difficult to learn how to drive a manual later in life if you're only used to automatics.

Other than that, get as modern a car as your budget allows, so it includes the most up-to-date safety features, yet with as small an engine as possible, to keep the insurance premium down.
