Absolutely not – there’s nothing wrong with BMW’s manual gearbox and it serves the 420d well. Obviously, if you’re driving in towns a lot, an automatic would be preferable, but if the price and spec of the car you’re looking at both meet your needs, you don’t have to avoid a three-pedal 420d.
