Looking to replace our Qashqai.

Looking to replace our Qashqai.

Hi , I have a 2010 diesel quashqai and am looking to trade up. It’s our second car, I use it for work at the week , and 3-4 200k trips per year. under 20 k mileage per year, apart from longer journeys not on motorways. We are a family of 4 but for trips we tend to use husbands car. I am looking at trade / sale of car plus 13-15 k budget max, I love height etc of quashqai type car. Wondering what car type would suit and keep value if trading up in 4/5 years ? Thanks, this is a great way of getting advice

Our answer:

Hi Amanda,

Let's start with an assumption that you'll have about €18,000 to spend in total. I would also suggest that you consider ditching diesel completely, especially with such low annual mileage, and most of it at relatively low speeds. Diesels are not great in those conditions, with higher maintenance bills likely in the long term, never mind the fact that trade-in values of diesels in another five years might not be strong. That's the great unknown, really. In your position I'd go for petrol or hybrid and accept that it might not be as economical as a good diesel on the few times a year you do the longer run.

So, looking in the Carzone database for options with higher up seating, etc, take a look at these:

Hyundai Tucson: good car, available with 1.6-litre petrol engine

Nissan Qashqai: if you liked it, the next-gen one is better again and can be had with petrol power

Renault Kadjar: same underpinnings as the Qashqai, but a fraction more spacious. Can be had with petrol engines

SEAT Ateca: a great option - possibly the one I'd go for here

Skoda Yeti: not everyone likes the looks (I do), but they're very rare full-stop. Good car if you like it - if not as spacious as all of the above

Toyota C-HR: seems only the petrol one is within budget (there are hybrid models, too). Likeable car, but make sure you're happy with the rear seat space and that it's not too dark

Let me know if you need help further narrowing things down.
