Hello, how much duty/import tax can I expect to pay for a 2010 Land Rover Defender. My plan is to convert the vehicle to a EV vehicle. I expect to use the vehicle for two months before starting the conversion. Any information appreciated. Thanks John
Hi John,
We don't have quite enough information from you to be able to give you accurate figures, unfortunately. The big unknown is the value as far as Revenue is concerned as it might be very different to the price you actually pay for the vehicle. It's called the Open Market Selling Price (OMSP) and it's defined as the price Revenue believes the vehicle would sell for in Ireland. A quick glance at the Carzone classifieds reveals 2010 Defenders ranging in asking price from €23,000 to €129,000.
If it's a private vehicle, then VRT will be calculated based on its WLTP CO2 rating. I believe that all versions of the Defender will be in the top band for vehicles emitting more than 191g/km. That's 41 per cent. So, for example, if the OMSP is €50,000, VRT will be 41 per cent of that, i.e. €20,500.
For commercial vehicles, the VRT is 13.3 per cent.
As the Defender was made in the UK, I don't think you'd have the 10 per cent import duty to worry about (though get clarification on that before committing), but you are likely to have to pay 23 per cent VAT on the price of the car.
Oh, and don't forget the NOx levy, which can be as high as €4,850 for diesel-engined vehicles.
