Looking to buy a second hand Saab 9-5; any advice?

Our answer:

Hi Peter,

It depends which 9-5 you mean. If you mean the one that was briefly launched in 2010, just before the company folded, then I’d say a cautious good idea. It’s a bit of an unknown quantity – and it’s always a good idea to be wary when buying a car made by a company that was in the process of going bust – but the mechanical bits are all Opel Insignia and that’s a pretty robust vehicle so it’s probably worth a roll of the dice. It’s also, to my eyes, an uncommonly pretty and distinctive car, and is absolutely massive inside.

If you mean the previous 9-5 I’d be more cautious. A lot more. They’re notorious for developing major engine and suspension problems so unless it’s an absolute minter and you’re getting it for half nothing, I’d suggest leaving it.
