Looking to buy a 4WD estate...

Hi. I'm looking to buy a four wheel drive estate on your site, but when I put 4x4 in keywords and select Estate from body type it gives me hundreds of SUVs that I have no interest in. How do I search efficiently? Any tips for buying such a car?

Our answer:

Hi Gary,

You’re probably going to have to do it model by model. Use the make and model drop-down boxes to choose the car in question (e.g. Audi, then A4), then select ‘estate’. And then, in the ‘Refine Your Search by’ box at the top, in which you can type what you want, you’re going to have to put in each marque’s specific branding for their off-road estates (e.g. allroad for Audis etc).

So, to help you, we’re going to list all the 4x4 estates we can think of (and there are a lot of Volkswagen Group products in here, as the conglomerate loves a rugged wagon. Here goes: Audi A4 allroad, Audi A6 allroad, Ford Focus Active (this is a very new car, though, so it’s unlikely there’ll be a lot of used examples), Opel (or Vauxhall for imports from the UK) Insignia Country Tourer, Peugeot 508 RXH, SEAT Leon X-Perience, Skoda Octavia Scout, any of the Subarus Forester/Legacy/Outback, the Volkswagen Golf Alltrack, the Volkswagen Passat Alltrack and the Volvo Cross Country models – they’re either called this, or there’s also the XC70 to look out for, but in essence the V60 Cross Country or the V90 Cross Country.

Of these, the VW Group models are good (especially the Skoda Octavia Scout) and the Volvo CCs/Audi allroads are particularly plush, but the Subaru Outback might be a leftfield choice for you.

You could, of course, just aim for a four-wheel-drive estate without all the lifestyle pretensions, in which case the Audis A4 and A6 look to be the winners. But you can get the Skoda Octavia and Superb Combis with 4WD, while there’s also a four-wheel-drive variant of the Ford Mondeo Estate. Good luck with your search.
