Looking to buy a 2010 Prius. Any advice appreciated re price and battery, and anything else to look for. Thanks.

Our answer:

Hi Dave,

The car should be worth between €8,000 and €9,000, but you’re sort of on the cusp of the expected life-cycle of its nickel-metal hydride battery. They’re supposed to last for ten years and up to 480,000km, but in reality most people experience about eight years’ of life and about 250,000km. Replacing it would cost a few thousand Euro, most likely, so try and establish whether it has had its battery replaced in recent months/years for additional peace of mind. You’ll know if it’s about to expire if, on a test drive, you get a battery warning light in the dashboard and reduced performance.
