Hi Shane, I have no preference for either MPV (vw touran), saloon (vw jetta or passat) or SUV (vw Tiguan). My main priority is safety for my 3 children (4, 7 and 10 years old). What type of car would you recommend as the strongest/safest for us? Looking at the kerb weight some cars are heavier and in a frontal crash (i.e. Tiguan) might do better. But is it more important the weight or the internal space (i.e. Touran) for the kids to be safer?
Hi Patrick,
Neither is more important, to be honest. In fact, lots of weight can often make a car less safe, as it has more kinetic energy to disperse in an impact. However, if it’s safety you’re looking for then there are two key things to do. First of all, visit the Euro NCAP website — Euro NCAP is the independent crash test expert organisation and has been carrying out crash tests on most new cars since the nineties. Have a scroll through the results to see which models you like are the safest, but don’t just rely on the star ratings; have a proper read of each result and check out the percentage scores for each type of impact, especially the child occupant safety rating.
