For that money, you could do a lot, lot worse than a lightly used Dacia Duster 1.5 dCi 110. It’s not everyone’s cup of tea, and you have to accept interior compromises in terms of quality, but in terms of space, driving manners, running costs and equipment, it’s a decent option.

Beyond that, you’re looking at older, higher-mileage stuff and, for the budget, you ought to be looking at the Japanese or Korean vehicles, such as a Kia Sportage, Hyundai ix35 or Mazda CX-5 – the last of these is our favourite, if you can find one with the 2.2-litre diesel engine.

We did also see considerably older BMW X5, Land Rover Discovery III and Range Rover Sport models available in the price range, but you’re taking a risk with these, especially the last two, as they are not known to be incredibly reliable, especially where electrics are concerned. A decent Volkswagen Tiguan Mk1 might be available if you fancy the premium touch, though.

Your annual mileage means that you don’t necessarily need diesel, but you’ll struggle to find decent petrol SUVs for this money.
