The Qashqai+2 is a very good option, largely because it’s not that much bigger, or more expensive to run, than a standard Qashqai. As far as seven-seat SUVs go, we do love both the Kia Sorento and the Hyundai Santa Fe, but these are larger, more expensive vehicles with higher running costs. It’s worth looking at a Mitsubishi Outlander — while it does have the larger 2.2 diesel, it’s pretty frugal and not as bulky as the Kia or Hyundai. Nissan’s 2013-onward X-Trail is also worth a look — it’s basically a bigger Qashqai, and has lots of space inside, and an excellent 1.6 diesel engine.
