If you want a reliable engine and a smooth ride to take on the worst road surfaces way out there in the west, then we automatically think ‘Japanese crossover or SUV’ – and you could do a lot worse than a Honda CR-V. Also look at the ubiquitous Nissan Qashqai, Toyota RAV4 and any rugged Subaru, like the Forester, Outback or XV.
