If you want to buy a car with its annual tax based on its engine capacity, then you have to buy any vehicle registered before 2008, as our laws changed to a CO2-based system on January 1, 2008. However, any pre-2008 2.4- to 3.0-litre vehicle will cost at least €1,034 a year to tax, and anything up to €1,809, if you stray beyond 3,000cc; an old Isuzu Trooper, or its Opel Monterey analogue, would suit your needs perfectly, but with a 3.1-litre diesel motor, it’ll be in the top band for road tax.
