Looking for more than a car Hi Carzone, I want to replace my car with something that will feel special, turn heads and still be practical, like my current Chrysler Delta. Looking from 2014 upwards and from €20-€30k. I do about 35,000km a year. 181 Alfa Romeo Stelvio 2.2D Auto - A vehicle I've dreamed about owning since launch is finally in my budget. Will never fail to turn a head but reliability concerns me. 191 DS7 Crossback 1.5 Diesel Auto OR 1.6 Petrol Auto - I had a Citroen DS5 and I was very pleased with the reliability. I have a DS dealership on my door step too. 2016 Mercedes-Benz CLS Shootingbrake 2.0D Auto - Gorgeous exterior, interior isn't very exciting or special. 141 Lexus RX450H 3.5 Petrol Auto- Build quality and reliability are very appealing, running costs scare me, road tax is low though so would it be economical for 35km per year mileage or rob me? Volvo XC90 - Useful 3rd row I will use from time to time, most expensive out of my choices and higher mileage examples only in my budget. What are your comments on each car and which would you choose? Thanks
Hi Brian,
That's quite a wide cross-section of options! First up, here are my opinions on these cars:
181 Alfa Romeo Stelvio: It's a great car, economical for long distances, comfortable and it looks fabulous inside and out. There have been a few electrical niggles in this model since launch, but nothing deal-breaking that I know of, and no major mechanical issues.
191 DS 7 Crossback: Another good-looking and quite rare car with a great interior. Given your mileage, I don't think that the petrol model would be a good idea, but the diesel would be economical. The Alfa is better to drive in truth, but that's hardly surprising. Interestingly, our data shows just as many known issues with this car as there are for the Alfa so don't automatically assume it will be reliable just because your previous DS was.
2016 Mercedes CLS Shooting Brake: This is a stunning looking car and I'd find it difficult to choose any of the SUVs you've mentioned over it unless you need the extra space or raised seating position. It is older though, so is likely to need more maintenance sooner. Saying that, our data shows that it has been reliable so far.
141 Lexus RX 450h: Though this is the oldest car you've listed, it's also likely the most reliable. I don't love the design inside and out, but that's a personal thing. It's very comfortable and refined on the road and while it will use more fuel than the diesel cars listed, it shouldn't be completely ruinous unless you have a heavy right foot.
I'd rule out the XC90 based on what you've said. It's a good car, but it sounds as if you'd be making compromises to get one into budget and that would likely lead to expensive maintenance bills.
So, if it was my money, I'd be sorely tempted by the CLS Shooting Brake. If that's not practical enough, then I'd go for the Stelvio. Best advice I can give you, though, is to go drive them all - and several examples of the ones you put on your shortlist - so you can form your own opinion.
