Depending on what size of car you need, you want to be looking at a city car (petrol), a supermini (possibly diesel) or a small family hatch (definitely diesel). Three we can think of off the tops of our heads are the Hyundai i10 (city car), Ford Fiesta (supermini) and Opel Astra (family hatch), all of which should return 60 to the gallon on the motorway, which will be cheap to tax thanks to low CO2 emissions and which should be readily available for considerably less than €10,000.
