Looking for a car for my son.

Looking for a car for my son.

I am looking to buy a car that my son can also use as a learner driver. I already have a commercial vehicle but am also now looking for a family car that my son can use to learn to drive. Could you recommend make and model in terms of cars that insurance companies will also cover a named driver who is a learner? Thank you.

Our answer:

Hi Julie,

If you’re buying a car for a first-time driver, realistically it needs to be small, cheap, underpowered and with an engine no bigger than 1.2 litres – this precludes most family cars. You might be able to get a SEAT Leon 1.0 TSI and insure it for your son, but truthfully you need to be looking at superminis (Ford Fiesta, Peugeot 208 etc) or the smallest city cars (Toyota Aygo, Volkswagen Up etc) for him. It's also important that you don't 'front' with the insurance company, which means saying you are the main driver and insuring your son as a named driver only, rather than the reality being the other way around.
