Looking for a big reliable car as I do a lot of mileage. Considering Toyota Avensis, Hyundai i40 or Mazda6: 2012. Any opinions on either?

Our answer:

Hi Kenneth,

All good choices, especially if reliability and comfort are your priorities. On a personal note, I’d go for the Mazda, because it’s the most enjoyable to drive, but I can understand if that’s not your biggest concern. The Avensis would probably turn out to be the most reliable overall, but to be honest, trying to pick the most reliable car from these three is like trying to pick the best player from the FC Barcelona squad – you’re already operating at the highest possible level.

On balance then, I think the best one to go for is the i40. It has a modicum of the Mazda’s driving enjoyment, has a plusher, more comfortable cabin than the Avensis and the 1.7 CRDi engine is economical. It’s also superbly reliable and, thanks to Hyundai’s five-year warranty, it will still have two years' of full manufacturer cover left to run.
