Looking for €5k economical auto.

Looking for €5k economical auto.

I am looking for the most economical 2nd hand automatic for under €5k

Our answer:

Hi Miriam,

This could be a good time to go for a Toyota Prius. Technically, it uses a CVT (continuously variable transmission) and not a conventional automatic, but don’t let that worry you. A budget of €5,000 gets you a 2007-2008 model, and they’re roomy, comfortable and very reliable. Economy will depend on your driving style, and long motorway journeys will take a toll on your mpg, but you should easily be able to get above 50mpg with a bit of practice. Just be careful to avoid ex-taxis, as they’ll potentially have had abuse. The Honda Insight, although a bit smaller than a Prius, is a good option, as is the old-shape Civic Hybrid. If you want something with longer legs for motorway journeys, have a look for a Skoda Octavia diesel with the DSG automatic gearbox, although they will be thin on the ground for a €5k budget.
