Looking at importing high-end cars...

Seen a similar question to VRT'ing a panamera, but I am trying to enquire about importing one of two car choices. One being a 2011-2013 Jaguar XJL LWB (3.0l V6 Diesel), and the other 2011 Porsche Panamera 3.0l V6 Diesel. The Jaguar gives up different VRT readings depending on spec, portfolio, luxury, prem lux, etc. There is no listing for Porsche so hard to get a rough estimate, and I don't want to purchase one from the UK to be landing with a ridiculous bill from the Revenue's opinion of an OMSP. Any help with some figures I can work with? IE; whats a maximum I could be looking at, registered on Irish plates on both cars.

Our answer:

Hi Martin,

Let’s take this in stages. Both cars are post-2008 so we’re working on CO2 emissions for the main VRT fee connected to the OMSP, and both cars are in Band E (Porsche 172g/km of CO2, Jaguar 189g/km of CO2) so will require 30 per cent of their OMSP to be paid if imported. Roughly speaking, a 2011-ish Jaguar XJ L 3.0-litre Diesel should be worth between €13,000 and €14,000, which means a VRT bill of between €3,900 and €4,200. The Porsche is harder to value but we’d estimate a 2011 Diesel to be between €25,000 and €30,000 (as 2014 Panameras, the oldest we could find, are typically from around €45,000), resulting in between €7,500 and €9,000 of VRT.

But, as we said in our previous answer, older, polluting diesel engines are what the 2020 NOx tax, which goes on top of VRT, was designed to prevent the importation of. So as the Porsche emits 146mg/km of NOx and the Jaguar puts out 162mg/km, you’ll be looking at an additional bill of €2,235 on the Panamera and €2,635 on the Jaguar. That means, on our estimates (and they are only estimates, remember), you’ll be paying overall VRT of between €6,535 (for a €13,000 XJ L) and €6,835 (on a €14,000 XJ L) to import the Jaguar, or €9,735 (on a €25,000 Panamera) or €11,325 (on a €30,000 Panamera) to import the Porsche. You have to ask yourself, is paying half the value of an old diesel Jag in VRT alone good financial sense? Or more than 11 grand of VRT on top of a 30-grand used Porsche really worth it? You’d probably be better off buying a €45,000 2014 Panamera and running that instead, it’d be less hassle.
