Looking at importing a Defender.

I am looking at importing a Defender 110 which is a 2015 five seater. It has the 2.2 Diesel engine. The mileage is 10000 miles. What approximately would the cost be as I have failed to get a answer from revenue. Thanks Conor

Our answer:

Hello Conor,

This is precisely the sort of vehicle our government no longer wants you to import: an older-type diesel with high CO2 and NOx. In fact, finding a NOx output for the 2015 Defender with the 2.2-litre TD4 engine (it was EU5-compliant but not EU6) is difficult, but with a CO2 output of 295g/km, we know this is a polluting diesel and so will likely have very high NOx levels. Add in the fact that the last-of-the-line Defenders are normally worth between €40,000 and €50,000 as an Open Market Selling Price, and we can already see that importing a five-seat 2015 110 will be prohibitively expensive. The VRT alone will be €14,400 to €18,000, based on the CO2 and the OMSP, while the NOx tax on top of this is very likely to be up at the €4,850 ceiling for polluting diesels. You’re therefore looking at €19,000 to €23,000 in taxes, on top of whatever the Land Rover will cost you in the first place.

You might be able to get a lower deal (13.3 per cent VRT) if you’re registering the Defender as a commercial vehicle, but you cannot then use it for private reasons at all, otherwise you risk a €4,000 fine for doing so.
