Hi, I just moved from the Netherlands to Ireland. And I'm trying to figure out how it works with tax prizes and what kind of taxes/insurance I need to have before I'll get on the road! Hope to hear soon from you, greetings!! Jimmy
Hi Jimmy,
Obviously you need car insurance, which you can get from any good broker. How much this is will depend on which vehicle you end up choosing, where you’re going to keep it and a host of other factors. You can read our guides regarding how to save money on car insurance https://www.carzone.ie/news/motoringadvice/Best-ways-to-save-on-car-insurance-2144.html, whether you need GAP insurance https://www.carzone.ie/news/motoringadvice/What-is-GAP-insurance-and-is-it-worth-getting--2174.html and some of the key car-insurance jargon. https://www.carzone.ie/news/motoringadvice/Car-Insurance-Jargon-Explained-2204.html
As to the taxes, we have three main ones you could fall foul of, if you’re buying a car. You’ll definitely have to buy motor tax each and every year, no matter what age of vehicle you buy, and this is set by CO2 emissions for cars registered from January 1, 2008, onwards, or engine capacity prior to this point. The government has a webpage https://www.gov.ie/en/publication/41c9cc-motor-tax-rates/ dedicated to these, so you can see how much you will be paying each year on a given car.

Ask us anything motoring related and please provide as much information as possible so we can give you the most accurate advice.
