Our answer:

Hi Prince,

Hi Prince. Would you mind me asking if you’ve ever owned and driven a diesel car before? Because it not, it sounds to me as if some of these issues are related to being unused to diesel power. Because of the way compression ignition works, it’s not at all unusual to feel the car ‘surging’ a bit in low gears, without any pressure on the accelerator, so that probably clears that one up. When you say the stop-start isn’t working all the time, do you mean it’s not working at all? Or do you mean it doesn’t work every time? Stop-start systems have complicated computer controls that mean they don’t always and automatically kick in. It depends on how warm the engine is, and how much other systems are draining the battery.

As for the fuel consumption, I’m afraid 6.0 litres per 100km sounds about right for a brand new diesel with low miles, especially if you’re mostly driving it in town. That official 4.0 litres/100km figure is, as with most cars, pure fiction I’m afraid. The official tests are done in a laboratory and bear little relation to how the cars work in real life. I would think though that as the engine ‘runs in’ and loosens up a little, you should expect consumption to reduce, and if you drive with a little care and attention, you should get that figure closer to 5.0 litres/100km.

As for engine noise and abnormal pulling? Sorry, that's hard to analyse from afar, and anyway I’d probably just advise you to do what you’ve already done which is to bring the car back into the dealer to be checked out.
