Jettas of that era are quite robust and reliable. Both the 1.6 and 2.0 diesels suffer from a few known issues with how they drive, but you'll notice straight away that something is amiss on a test drive, so, if the car you're looking at isn't running quite right, walk away and find another. Other than that, the Jetta is comfortable, spacious and the diesel engines are economical.
