They’re pretty dependable, if not absolutely bulletproof – the dual-mass flywheel and clutch are known weak points on the fifth-gen Passat, so check that there's no unexpected juddering at take-off or vibration at idle. Also go through this car’s history with a fine-toothed comb to make sure it has good provenance and, providing the price is right, it should be a sound purchase.
