Is the NCT valid in Northern Ireland?

Is the NCT valid in Northern Ireland?

I'm from the North; if I buy a southern car with an NCT until June can I drive it home and do I have to MOT it straight away or when NCT expires?

Thanks

Our answer:

Hi Dee,

Odd you should ask this but I’ve just been through the same process with our family car, moving from Dublin to Belfast. I’m afraid the Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA) won’t accept an Irish NCT as equivalent to an MOT, so you’ll have to get it booked in and tested before you can change the plates over. You’ll also have to notify Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) that you have brought the car into the country and they’ll decide whether or not there is any VAT to pay. If it’s a used car, it’s very unlikely that it’ll cost you anything. Then, MOT in hand, you just need to send off Form V55 with the registration document (logbook) and preferably a receipt or bill of sale for the car and you’ll get your new numberplates in a few weeks.

One word of warning – there could well be a delay in getting your MOT. When I booked late last year there was a six-week wait for an appointment.
