It depends on what you need. The old X1 is actually closer, mechanically speaking, to the 3 Series, but to be honest has never been an especially satisfying car – it’s reasonably spacious but the steering is unbelievably heavy and the styling is really not very pretty. A 1 Series, unless you really need the space of the X1, is a better choice from a driving point of view. Mind you, a better and potentially more satisfying middle ground would be a 3 Series Touring estate, which is – hands down – one of the best cars you’ll ever drive, and practical with it.
