Is my Peugeot a write-off?

I have a Peugeot 208 the year 2008. It hasn't worked well and recently I've been told by a mechanic that it's a write off. It has 80 000 miles and was used for short distance driving. The mechanic has told me I'll get 200 euros for it. The engine is the problem and it is a write off but he wants to buy the car for 200 euros. Is this a reasonable price given the problems. The car was never crashed and it's body is in perfect condition. I'm clueless about these things so I would appreciate advice.

Our answer:

Hello Gillian,

OK, first things first, Peugeot didn’t start making the 208 until 2012, so we’re guessing you have the preceding model, called a 207, instead. The values of functioning 207s that are ten years old, with that sort of mileage on them, are around the €4,000 mark.

With the greatest possible respect, seek further opinions from other garages. If the car was running, but not smoothly, the suggestion that the engine is a ‘write-off’ sounds like it might not be the whole truth; other garages might give you a different opinion on the value of repairs. And a good condition Peugeot 207 would be worth far more than €200 when broken down for its constituent spare parts, even if its engine was terminally damaged.
