Is it ok to have a Golf without a muffler?

Is it ok to have a Golf without a muffler?

Looking at buying a 2008 golf 1.9tdi, but it has a decat exhaust with no muffler, seller tells me that it passed the nct last month but I don't know, what's the laws surrounding the exhaust and emissions in the nct?

Our answer:

Hi Eoin,

First thing is to check the NCT certificate. A car should have its original exhaust aftertreatment system fitted, for sure, but if it's just the rear muffler you are referring to, that's usually just for noise reasons, not emissions. I would have thought that the car would be unacceptably noisy without it, but that's your own call. After all, there are loads of similar Golfs on sale, so don't settle for one you have any doubts over.
