Is auto better than manual?

Hi, I am looking at a 2011 320d Auto Sport Plus Edition with 50000 miles and was originally a UK import. What are your thoughts on it? Is auto better than manual? Had the n47 timing chain/turbo problems calmed down by the updated 2011 version? What are the downsides to UK imports? What should I be looking for? I currently drive a 2011 GTI manual and need better mpg on motorway Thanks

Our answer:

Hi Shane,

Auto is definitely better than manual for resale further down the line – buyers expect a prestige car to come with a self-shifter these days. The N47 problem has never quite gone away. BMW tried to fix it, and was partially successful, but buy carefully and don’t touch anything without a full BMW service history. Downsides to UK imports are that you have to do all the Vehicle Registration Tax legwork yourself and, if the car comes with a lot of options, Revenue can slam you for extra tax, which is annoying. Worse, you won’t know how much until after you’ve bought the car (still a ridiculous situation).

Check all the electronics carefully to make sure all the buttons work, and make sure that the car comes with original-spec runflat tyres. You’ll definitely get better motorway economy. Probably around 50mpg or thereabouts.
