Is an old car ok for first-time drivers?

I’m just enquiring I’m a first time driver...just passed my provisional and starting my twelve lessons and I’m buying a relatively cheap car at the minute but I’m wondering...a few people have told me there’s this rule where a car can’t be any older than 10 years...for insurance....however one of my friends is an 08 and he got insured without a problem. Just enquiring is that really a rule.

Our answer:

Hi Aaron,

It's not a rule as such, but there is some evidence that insurers are reluctant to cover cars that are over 10 years old, or not without upping the premium in any case. To be honest, though, that effect is likely to be small in comparison to insuring a new driver. Just make sure you get insurance quotes before committing to buying any car.
