Is an imported BMW still under warranty?

If I buy a 172 BMW 5 Series from a non BMW dealer how can I ensure it’s still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty? It’s a UK import. Does that make any difference? Any other issues I should watch out for?

Our answer:

Hi Laura,

You should be OK, as the original manufacturer’s warranty is a pan-European one, and it will be honoured at any BMW official dealer in the EU. It is possible to hit trouble if you get a problem with a part that was serviced outside the BMW network, but that usually only applies if you’re trying to get help once out of warranty anyway. That said, it’s a good idea to buy from a BMW approved used dealer, as the two-year warranty that comes with their used cars is very impressive.
