I’d like to buy a premium brand car (eg 5 Series Touring). I usually buy diesel but I’m worried with all the negative press lately that it will depreciate a lot when I go to trade it in 3 yrs time. I average 22,000km a year. Am I better off buying a petrol or hybrid model instead? Any advice would be appreciated.
Hi Laura,
At 22,000km you’re just on the cusp between petrol and diesel, really, so some of it will come down to how and where you drive (if you’re mostly driving in and around town, then petrol might still be a good option). The only petrol option for a BMW 5 Series at the moment is the 2.0-litre turbo 530i, which can be a touch thirsty so buy carefully there. If you’re looking for a good hybrid option in the premium market, then try the Lexus GS 300h, which is a terrific car (beautifully built too) or, mix hybrid and diesel for the best of both worlds with the Mercedes E-Class E 300 d Hybrid, but you’ll have to buy an older model to get that one.
