What is your advice for buying a first car under €3000? Is there such a car that is cheap to buy, cheap to run and at the same time quite interesting. Ie, preferably not a 15 year old Opel Corsa or Toyota Yaris. Perhaps something stylish/fun to drive or even simply something that's not an eyesore nor an embarrassment to be seen in. Thanks in advance!
Hi Gavin,
Short answer? No. Especially for a first-time driver, which tends to restrict you (for insurance purposes) to as close to 1.0 litres as you can get. The best I can suggest is a 2004-2005 MINI One, but that came with a 1.6-litre engine (albeit not a very powerful one) so it might be too juicy on insurance. You could, potentially, track down an Alfa 147 1.6, but again, insurance is going to be an issue, and the electrics are a potential nightmare. If you don’t need to carry people in the back seat, we did manage to find a Smart City Coupe for under €3k, which is certainly different… Or you could get the brilliant Suzuki Swift, which is great to drive, kinda cute to look at and endlessly reliable. There’s a couple of 1.4-litre VW Beetles in your price range too, but don’t discount the Mk1 Yaris — it’s a nicer car to drive than you might think.
