In a quandry with my imported car...

Hi, I have bought a car from Newry and clearly didn't have my homework done as I didn't know the vrt included NOx emissions and the cost associated with this. Now instead of paying €1,700 which was what I had calculated as the VRT, I actually have to pay €4,200 and this is just not affordable. I never actually registered the car in my name and now I need to sell it. It's proving difficult to sell in the republic when I mention the amount of VRT due. What would you advise. Is there some company that would take this in the north and should I send off the registration form to put it into my name or leave it? Thanks in advance. Liz

Our answer:

Hi Liz,

That is a pain. You can't sell the car on in Ireland without registering it here first, so you either find someone to buy it or trade it in against a more affordable model in Northern Ireland or you bite the bullet and go through the process here. Neither are good options, I know.
