Hi, I am a new driver. Planning to buy a 2008 Mazda2. My wife holds an Irish learner permit and I have an international driving permit from India. Could you please advise me about insurance and car choice?
Hi Sujith,
Your car choice is excellent, as the 2 is reliable, safe and very nice to drive. Frugal too. Your licence situation puts you in a bit of a grey area though. Irish insurers will, generally, find any excuse they can either to (a) not insure you at all or (b) try to extract as much money as possible from you. Your wife’s premium will be inflated until such time as she passes her test and it’s quite possible that you may not be able to be insured at all, as they may not accept an Indian licence as valid. The best I can suggest is to get an Irish licence as soon as possible for yourself and in the meantime try and find a good insurance broker who might be able to find some decent cover at a decent price for you.
