I'm looking to buy a Volvo S60 at the moment.

Hi,

I'm looking to buy a Volvo S60 at the moment, preferably a 2012 or 2013 D3 (2.0-litre) one but I'd also take a D2 (1.6-litre). There are a few 2011 D3s around at the moment but with 80,000 miles/130,000km and upwards - does this sound like high mileage for a 2011? Would I be better off spending a bit more and getting a lower mileage unit? I'd rather do that than end up having trouble further down the line with it. I'd be doing about 20,000km a year myself and usually hang on to a car for three or four years. Also, any idea of what kind of money I should expect to pay for one of these 2011s? (I know it will vary a bit depending on interior spec, etc.).

Thank you

Our answer:

Hi Senan,

You’ll pay anything between €15k and €19k for a decent 2011 S60, depending on spec, and if it were us, we’d go for the 2.0-litre D3. Why? Because it’s Volvo’s own engine. The 1.6 D2 engine was bought in from Ford and PSA Peugeot Citroen and while it’s fine, it does have some well known issues (fragile water pump, exhaust gas recalculation valve, sludge waste oil building up in the head). The D3 engine though is all Volvo’s own work and it’s a legendarily solid unit that gives very little bother. Don’t worry too much about mileage, but make sure it comes with a full, stamped and sealed service history.
