I'd like to import a 1997 Escort...

Hi I am very interested in buying a 1997 escort ghia convertible from northern ireland . The car has been motd in northern Ireland since December 2013 . I am just wondering what costs I would have to register the car in ireland thanks .

Our answer:

Hi Colm,

The good news is that you shouldn't have to pay import duty or VAT on that car as it has been in the North - and you can prove it - since 2013. The bad news is that it doesn't quite qualify for classic car status, so you will have to pay VRT based on its CO2 emissions rating, plus the NOx levy. It's likely to be in the top band for emissions at 41 per cent and that the NOx levy will be the maximum for a petrol car at €600. You'll need to take a guess at the OMSP (Open Market Selling Price) that Revenue will say the car is worth in Ireland and then work out 41 per cent of that to estimate the VRT bill.
