OK, that’s a pretty broad remit and you haven’t said whether you’d rather buy new or used. However, going with the old rule of buying at two and selling at five, I’d say try and track down a 2014 model year Volkswagen Golf 1.6 TDI DSG, a Ford Focus 1.6 TDCi Powershift or a Toyota Auris 1.8 Hybrid. All are cars that are very much in demand, so that should shield you from the worst ravages of depreciation and all are frugal, well made and nice to drive.
