You will have to wear out some shoe-leather for this one but it just might be possible to track down an Opel Astra 1.3 CDTi diesel for that kind of budget. It has plenty of space, is well built and reliable and very economical.
If you can't find one for your budget, try settling for something smaller. A 1.3 Suzuki Swift would be just about ideal, if a good bit smaller inside than the Astra.
