I want to bring my car over to Ireland...

I’m Irish and I work in the Uk for the last 14 years, as my parents are getting old I go back and over now most weekends as I can work from home. I wish to register my uk 2009 Toyota Auris in Ireland which I have owned since 2011 for my own use while at home in Mayo. I will live in the uk longer than I live in Ireland so I am willing to pay the vrt how do I proceed as I have owned the car since 2011.

Our answer:

Hi Pat,

If you have documentation to prove that you've owned and used the car yourself in the UK for more than six months then you shouldn't have any VRT to pay if you're going down the "Transfer of Residence" route as defined by Revenue.

If not, then the VRT rate will be determined by the value Revenue believes the car is worth in Ireland and the VRT band, the latter decided by the CO2 emissions rating. If you want us to estimate that for you please do let us know which engine is in the car.
