I want to bring a car from Mexico!

Good afternoon. I want buy a Pontiac Firebird from 1985, the car is from Mexico. I assume that the car has to pay VAT once is here and Duties once is over the port. how much is it in totay cause the car is more than 30 years old. Also, could you indicate me if i need to test the car for the european regulations too. The car is from 1985 so the VRT is 200 €. and CO2 IS 225G/M, does it affect any price over the 200 € VRT ? Which steps or papers should i get from mexico for show to the NCT centre ? If you could explain me all the procees involved would be grateful cause at the beguinin it is very confusing. Thanks very much

Our answer:

Hi Gabriel,

By far the simplest route to take involves employing a specialist agency for the whole job, as there may be a lot of paperwork. Also, it appears to be easier and cheaper to get such an agency to import the car to the UK first and then import it here from there, though we're not sure how Brexit will affect all that.

For reference, to import a car from Mexico to Ireland, a 10 per cent Common Customs Tarriff will be payable, calculated on the total expenditure to get the car here, including shipping, insurance, fees and of course the price you paid for the car. VAT is then payable on top of all that combined and there may be port charges as well.

You are right about the VRT of €200, though; as it's over 30 years old, that's all you'll pay for that.
